First Day of School
School will begin on August 24, 2020. Students will attend as follows:
- Monday, August 24th…Pre-K Boys, Kindergarten, Second Grade, Fourth Grade, Sixth Grade, Eighth Grade, Tenth Grade, and Twelfth Grade
- Tuesday, August 25th…Pre-K Girls, First Grade, Third Grade, Fifth Grade, Seventh Grade, Ninth Grade, Eleventh Grade
- Wednesday, August 26th…All students attend, Pre-K through Twelfth
Arrival & Dismissal Times
Arrival & dismissal times will remain the same as usual.
- Students may not enter the buildings before 7:30 AM and they will be
- Students will be dismissed at 3:15
Depending on guidance from ADH, arrival and dismissal times may be varied in order to increase social distancing. Parents will be notified if changes occur.
Pick-Up and Drop Off
- Pick up and drop off for students in grades 7-12 will be in front of the high school building.
- Pick up and drop off for students in grades K-6 will be in front of the elementary building.
Student Early Check-Out
- Sign-out for students K-6 (leaving early) will be in the elementary entry way.
- Sign-out for students 7-12 (leaving early) will be in the high school entry way.
Parents can speed up the sign-out process by calling the appropriate school office and requesting that the student be sent to the sign-out location.
Pre-K students will be checked in and out at the door each morning and afternoon. Temperatures will be checked before the student enters in the morning. Parents will not be allowed in the Pre-K building. If a student must be checked out early, the parent will call the Pre-K office to arrange for pick-up.
Pre-K and Kindergarten Meet and Greet (Open House)
Pre-K and Kindergarten parents may schedule a time to visit their child’s classroom on August 11th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Only parents and students should attend and appointment times will be strictly enforced, as will all safety precautions. Parents and students will be screened before entering the building and face coverings must be worn for the entire visit.
Open House and Annual Title I Meeting
Persons allowed to enter the building will be district staff, students or professionals providing necessary services to students (mental health services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.) Everyone entering will be expected to follow ALL safety protocol, including wearing face coverings. Parents picking up students may go no further than the front foyer of the high school or elementary. No lunch visitors will be allowed.
PPE, Social Distancing, and Sanitation
- All classrooms doors will remain open to avoid constant contact with door knobs/handles. All outside doors will remain locked with no visitors allowed inside the building.
- Hand sanitizing stations will be made available to students.
- Health and safety procedures such as hand washing will be taught the first few days of school and encouraged throughout the year. Extra time will be provided for hand washing during transitions.
- Hallways will be divided and signage will direct student travel.Students will not be allowed to drink from water fountains but will have access to water filling stations.
- Students will be provided with one refillable water bottle but may also bring their own refillable water bottle to school.
- Students and staff will be provided with one cloth mask and are encouraged to bring additional masks to school. Disposable masks will also be available. All students and staff K-12 will be required to wear a mask while attending school or a school function and when riding in school-provided transportation. Students may remove masks when appropriate social distancing measures are in place as determined by a teacher or school administrator.
- In grades K-6, students will remain in class cohorts and teachers will travel.
- Cleaning and Sanitizing will be a high priority. Facilities are currently being sanitized, and extra cleaning will continue in the fall. Highly touched surfaces and restrooms will be cleaned throughout the school day. Classrooms will be sanitized between class periods and/or student cohorts. Extra transition time will be provided for this purpose.
- Every effort is being made to arrange classrooms and seating spaces to provide for safe social distancing while still maintaining students’ ability to interact and communicate with others in their classroom. When 6 ft. distancing cannot be guaranteed, such as class transition times, then face coverings are required.
- Supplies and materials, including technology, will not be shared by students. Each student will have his or her own tech device and school supplies.
We ask that all students and staff self-screen by answering the following Arkansas Department of Health screening questions each day prior to reporting to school or the bus:
- Have you had a fever of 100.4°F or greater in the last 2 days
- Have you had a cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat, or loss of taste or smell
- Have you been in contact with a person known to be infected with COVID-19 within the previous 14 days
Any person entering the school may be required to have their temperature checked by school personnel.
Recess, Lunch, & Transportation
- Students riding the bus will be required to wear a mask before entering the bus and social distancing will be utilized to the extent possible.
- Students K-6 will be served breakfast and lunch inside the classroom and students 7-12 will be social distanced during breakfast and lunch.
- Students K-6 will attend recess by cohorts and playground equipment will be disinfected between each use.
- Students will continue to participate in activity classes such as PE, art, music, library. GT, etc. We anticipate sports and other extracurricular activities will take place in the fall with possible modifications. We are awaiting further guidance from ADH and DESE.
In the event an individual tests positive, we will follow the latest guidance from the ADH. The district Point of Contact (POC) will be in direct contact with ADH, compile a list of and communicate probable close contacts of students or staff with confirmed cases, and will use the leveled response guidance click provided to recommend next steps. This could result in a brief closure of a single school within the district to provide time for additional cleaning and sanitation.
Protocol for Student Illness
If a student comes to school sick or becomes sick while at school, the school nurse will screen the student and check their temperature. If temperature is over the ADH guidance, the student will be sent home and will need to be fever free for 48 hours without medication before returning to school. When the child returns to school they will check in with the school nurse.
We know students will begin the school year with gaps in learning due to the pandemic school closure. Administrative and curriculum teams are currently working to devise a plan for remediating skills. Additionally, students will be assessed to determine individual strengths and deficits. These assessments will determine if students need additional support. This support may include onsite before and after school tutoring, mobile tutoring (long-route buses) or offsite tutoring through ZOOM. Parents and students will receive more information on these plans.
School Closures and Blended Learning
By developing a plan for blended learning (combination of onsite and offsite learning), students who become ill or quarantined for a short amount of time, can continue their education while at home. In the event that school closes again, students and teachers will be equipped to continue teaching and learning remotely. Every student will have access to a personal computer. Kindergarten will have IPads and 1-12 will have Chromebooks. Google Classroom (LMS) will be used for assignments and teachers will use ZOOM when delivering live lessons. Teachers are currently being trained in this method of instruction and delivery, and students will learn to use it during the school day when they return in the fall. In circumstances where internet connectivity is impossible, instruction will be downloaded onto SD cards and made available to students for upload.
Students will learn how to use our Learning Management System (Google Classroom) with live and/or recorded lessons from their teachers. Students will be given this instruction by participating in lessons during the week while at school. Additionally, a parent training video on how to use Google Classroom will be made available to parents on August 17th so that parents will be equipped to support their child when learning occurs remotely.
Blended Learning Vs Virtual Learning (Lions Learn Virtual Academy)
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, aap.org “all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.” Manila Public Schools supports this recommendation; however, we believe that that it is our responsibility to give students and families the choice to decide what is best for them. The Lions Learn Virtual Academy was developed to meet the needs of students who are seeking an alternative to on-site, face-to-face instruction and have unique circumstances that prohibit on-site learning. Students who participate in LLVA:
- Are committed to the program for a minimum of one full semester
- Are monitored by their local school, but do not receive instruction from their local school.
- Instruction is provided by an offsite program called Lincoln Learning
- Will continue his/her instruction with Lincoln Learning even if school closes temporarily
- Were required to meet an enrollment deadline and abide by a virtual contract
Students with Special Needs (Special Education, 504, Dyslexia, etc.)
MPS will be prepared to accommodate students with special needs through both onsite and offsite instruction. In the event of a school closure, students will either receive instruction via a recorded video or live instruction via ZOOM.
